The Game Design Process

I’m always on the lookout for new material.
Hardly a day goes by when I’m not thinking about the next game.
Everything becomes a game design opportunity.
It’s like the proverbial Rose-colored glasses.
All Mediums are fair game: Books, Movies, TV, you name it.
Sure It’s obsessive, but people without obsessions aren’t that interesting.
I have to keep taking in material. Input always exceeds output.
If it doesn’t I’ll find myself staring at a blank piece of paper.
I look forward to few lost hours in the bookstore.
Eventually I come across some theme that inspires my imagination.
Frequently the Topic requires I do several hours of research.
During this time, I’ll be creating what I call the “Card List”.
The card list is a long list of phrases and ideas that I want to
Incorporate into the game. Frequently this list does turn into
The card list of the game. Once I feel the card list is complete,
I’ll determine the Victory conditions of the game.
Next I do the Turn Sequence, or rather the Mechanism.
The Mechanism is simply the Bridge that
Connects the Card List to the Victory Conditions.
Often I have to force it, but that, I know how to do.
Next comes refinements, and additional research and the
Occasional rewrite of some section, and then I go through the
Ritual of posting it on my site.
For me It’s a very satisfying experience.
After making a game I have a real feeling of accomplishment.
Honestly I don’t know how other people get by without it.
Each game is a tribute to something that needs be
remembered and honored and held sacred because it tells us
something about the past or the universe or ourselves.

Desired Site Improvements

As you can tell, I’m squeezing Lycos, Yahoo, and Wikki for all
I can get out of them, and thats with relatively no
programming skills and no monetary investment.

Travelling Frontiers has a database of all the games:
http://www.travelingfrontiers.com/search/
I would like to combine the database with these Personal
Pages so that people could rank the games and record
Sessions, reviews, etc. and have it in a form that
Statistical Analysis can be easily done.
My inspiration, of course, being Board Game Geek.
If you Know an simple, cheap, quick way of
doing something like that, let me know.
For anyone familiar with BGG, I also would like:
Avatars, Warpspawn Gold, Badges, Thumbs Up.

Another long talked about, desired feature, would be,
The ability to sign on, find opponents (live or computer) and
Play Warpspawn games online. Neat-o graphics would be a plus.

Chinese Checkers
War (the card game)
